Grab your enerQi-Blaster and step through the magic gate

- there's a job for you to do!

Soul Detectives can do amazing things, but magic alone can't help them.  Sometimes they need a Team that cleans up the mess! You are a Cleaner, part of the Clean-Up Crew and you are the ones they call when things get messy.

Who are you playing?
In Clean-Up Crew, you take up the role of Cleaners, protectors of Lost Souls and the Soul Detectives that help Lost Souls to cross over - but make no mistake: the job of a Cleaner is not glorious! You hide in the shadows within a world that condemns magic!

Who are you protecting the Soul Detectives from?
Monsters! Lots of them! They come for the Lost Souls you protect - but what they want them for is still mysterious!

How are you fighting?
Clean-Up Crew is a LUMEN game - and that means fast paced combat with powerful moves! Your standard weapon is your enerQi-Blaster, a weapon that channels the Qi around you! Some look like a magic wand, others look like rapiers, sword or brass knuckles - but they all pack a Qi-punch! But your enerQi-Blaster is not your only weapon! You have access to 5 special weapons that harness the power of the 5 Elements!

Can Cleaners do magic?
Cleaners are gifted to channel Qi and trained to use Paper Talisman to combine them with the power of the 5 Elements and create awe-inspiring spells!

Where to find the 5 Elements?
You will always start your battle with some of the 5 Elements, but when you kill monsters they generate Element-Drops! So you better kill lots of monsters to get those precious Elements!

Clean-Up Crew Adventures:

Longing for Tranquility is the first ever one-page Lumen game and you follow Milvus as they go on their last job with some rookies just before retirement.

Masks of Pestilence is the brainchild of an 8-year old boy with an amazing imagination - but it's also very gross and a proper horror game!

Loreley is currently in production and will be a totally different experience that focuses on solving the mysterious case of a Lost Soul.

- Artisan Version -

The Artisan Version will have an Intro Mission that will introduce you to the setting and the gameplay in a breathtaking story, but also artwork for the Cleaners and Monsters form a diverse team of 10 artists from all over the world and with representation from the LBGTQ+ community, and way more details about both the setting and what you can do!

Content Warning

This is a combat heavy game, so you have to expect combat - lot's of it! But there are other themes that might be difficult for you and we want to be upfront with it, so you don't purchase something you don't like.

Themes: death, magic, monsters, killing monsters, the supernatural

Reviews:

@CatlingGun says:

While I was reading it, I audibly shouted "There he is!" when I got to the drop system. I've read a lot of Lumen games, but never one with this kind of drop system! Basically, in true WuDe style, enemies drop elements. Powers are free-form spells, too, based on the five elements.
Clean-Up Crew is definitely for you if you like the high-octane power fantasy of LUMEN games but want a little wiggle room to create your own magic!

@oakenboro says:

These elements are used to power spells, called Paper Talismans (which are super cool, I’ll come back to them) and to power special kinds of weapons. Weapons and spells correspond to different elements, so your character will be looking for particular elements over others. I think that’s going to lead to some fascinating gameplay as you hunt and potentially trade for the elements you need, while your teammates may want other elements.

@hessan_yongdi says:

Another interesting aspect is of the game is curses. You don’t die in Clean-up Crew. Instead, hitting 0 hp places a curse on the Cleaner based on the Yin element of the monster that downed you.

@plural_dice says:

The sample Spells section is really cool and reading it gets you excited for the possibilities.
The scope of monsters is really fun but also what I really like about the monsters is the way they have a favoured Element, an Element they're vulnerable to and unique Drop conditions.

@AtlasArcane says:

I really enjoyed this games approach to magic: The Cleaners use special devices called enerQi-Blasters. These devices help them to channel Qi and make use of Paper Talisman to perform spells, created from the elemental energy that players collect from defeating enemies.

@TheGatesofTruth says:

[C]haracters are not defenseless, and they have ways to kick some ass and survive: weapons and spells.

@caderaspindrift says:

Clean-up crews aren't SUBTLE, they go in and GET THE JOB DONE
blast your PAPER TALISMAN with ELEMENT ENERGY --wood, fire, earth, metal, or water -- and stand back and watch the fireworks go off!
i'm not saying you HAVE to use this game system to play GHOST BUSTERS IN THE SEVENTEEN FIFTIES, but i'm just saying you CAN

@ttrpgencounters says:

Awesome game by WuDe RPG. He builds on an already existing world he created in Mariann: Soul Detective and using the Lumen system makes a fast paced and fun experience butt kicking cultists and supernatural creatures.

@ickbat says:

if you think an early 19th century, elemental-themed supernatural looter shooter #ttrpg might be your thing, check it out!

Hey!

I refreshed the community copies and I hope they don't get snatched up before you can get to them!

Thank you :) I really appreciate it! I'll come back and purchase an Art Copy in a few weeks to make up for it. I'll be sure to leave a rating, review, and spread the word. I hope you have a nice day.

Any chance for more copies? Sorry if it sounds like begging :(

Hey!

I just added some more community copies into the mix. I hope they don't run out before you see this.

Thank you so, so much. I'm Brazilian so USD prices get a little out of hand for us. If there's any way I can help to complete this game, let me know. I will buy the full version later on, count on it.

Best of wishes, you got this and everything else you aspire, thanks again for the kindness.

Hello! there would be more free copies? my currency doesnt traslate well to USD and I´m currently through a rough patch.

Im gonna drop some Community Copies in a minute!

Thank you!! I really mean it

No worries! I hope you like it!

What is Lumen exactly?

Hey! LUMEN is the system we use for the mechanics of Clean-Up Crew. You can find the System Reference Document (SRD) by Spencer Sample here.

LUMEN is created with the idea of simple rules and fast paced combat in mind. The idea is to bring the power fantasy style of video games like Destiny to your table and it works like a charm. You can easily have combat with waves of monsters that lasts only 1 hours of real time, because it is so simple and quick. Most sessions I played have been between 1 and 1-1/2 hours, but if you want to turn your game into multiple sessions with an overreaching arc, you can easily do that as well.

Thank you!

With every update I get more excited about the Artisan Version! Any chance we could see some teaser pictures!

You ask and we deliver!

Check out this overview over just some of the design in the book! You have every right to be excited!

This is f***ing rad!

Here is Garmbreak1 talking with Ralf (@wuderpg) about Clean-Up Crew!

I love the conceit of Clean-Up Crew: rad Cleaners burst through magical circles to rescue Soul Detectives when their latest case has turned messy! It's cool framing for action, and I can't wait to see what the itchfunded mini-campaign looks like!

I've got a little bit of a hype thread talking about some of the things I like about this game here.

Thanks for your kind words, Nick!

Love your Hype thread and the things you highlight there!

And just as you can't wait for the mini-campaign, I can't wait to work on it!

I'm a big fan of all the WuDe games but this one is especially cool. The collection of elements after defeating the monsters to be used  in play is excellent. I also was impressed that this game is a companion game to the Soul Detective game. While both can be played independently, it's a clever idea to place them both in the same game world. I highly recommend   "Kicking Ass" of some monsters as the Clean Up Crew!

(1 edit)

Thanks for your kind words for Clean-Up Crew and thanks for your shout-out to Mariann: Soul Detective!

Clean up crew is a game for players and a storyteller that heavily relies on a simple, but elegant, gameplay loop: a messy case happens, your crew is called to "kick ass" and after finishing the case, the characters get back to their HQ to have downtime, a much calmer sequence.

Firstly, as said, this elegant gameplay loop will make the experience really clear but also makes reading the rules simple: the information is delivered in a logical order that facilitates their comprehension.

Speaking of comprehension, the gameplay mechanics uses the LUMEN system (6-sided dice) with 3 different attributes: POWERS, PASSION and PATTERNS. However, what really feels like a core feature that will make the experience interesting, is the elements.

There are five of them: wood, fire, earth, metal, water. Each enemy can have an element but what is cool about the game design here is the fact that when characters die, the consequence will be different according to the element. Indeed, characters will get cursed, curse that can either be controlled or not, and that bring really great complications.

However, characters are not defenseless, and they have ways to kick some ass and survive: weapons and spells. The latter one feels interesting, as it requires Qi to be cast, has an element and also what I feel like a "tag»: some spells will have solo effects, other area effect or lasting effects. That make the design of the spells understandable and usable quickly!

Finally, because the game focuses on fights, the rules feature a content warning and safety tools at the beginning. I like this, as it clearly is a great example of how the game was designed: as a fun and enjoyable experience for all players that engage in clean-up crew!

Thank you for this beautiful review and your kind words!

I did a Hypeswap with WuDe reviewing Clean-up Crew. I found it interesting and an inspired mix of their Elemental Dice system and the LUMEN SRD!

Feel free to look at the full review here!

Thanks for your amazing review and your support!

A fast-paced and exciting take on another, more contemplative game! I love the pairing of this and Mariann: Soul Detective! Having a game for gently ushering souls to the afterlife and another game for kicking their asses is absolutely inspired.
Definitely pick this game up, hopefully while it's itchfunding.

Thanks for the kind words and your amazing review on Twitter!
